FEMNET Congratulates Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka
The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) joins the world in conveying our heartfelt congratulations on the appointment of Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, as the new Executive Director of UN Women. As a pan-African Network of women’s organizations in Africa, we do receive this news with gladness, particularly as it comes right on the heels of the celebrations marking the 10th Anniversary of the AU Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa.
The UN Women was established in July 2010 to exclusively focus on giving women’s rights issues a stronger voice within the UN system as well as promote gender equality and women’s empowerment amongst UN member states. Between 2008 up-to 2010, FEMNET was amongst several women’s rights organizations from Africa that were vigorously engaged in the process lobbying for the establishment of the UN Women under the Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR) campaign. Following its creation, FEMNET has continued to strategically partner with UN Women to deliver on its mandate for the advancement of women and girls not only in Africa, but worldwide.
In the ongoing global conversations on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, FEMNET looks forward to continued partnership with the UN Women in the call for a transformative agenda that will achieve gender equality, women’s rights and women’s empowerment by addressing the structural and systemic impediments to the realisation of gender equality. This can be achieved through a transformative stand-alone goal on gender equality and the inclusion of gender-specific targets and indicators integrated across all other goals.
We wish Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka best of luck as she takes up this important role and look forward to continue partnering with the UN Women family to protect and promote the rights of women and girls in Africa and the world at large.
