Reflecting on Progress and Challenges at the Beijing +30 Review Africa Regional Consultation

In a dynamic 40-minute session at the   6th Gender is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC) Strategic Engagement with AU, RECs, and Partners in Accra Ghana, leaders and advocates from across Africa gathered to review the progress made and the challenges ahead as we approach the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

The session highlighted notable advancements in the fight for gender equality across the continent. Significant strides have been made in combating violence against women, with countries like Nigeria passing crucial legislation. Women’s leadership has also seen growth, with increased female representation in various political and community roles in countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Liberia, Kenya, and Uganda. Education for girls is being prioritized in nations such as Mali and Kenya, reflecting a commitment to empowering the next generation.

Despite these achievements, challenges remain. Gender-biased legislation, socio-cultural barriers, and rising rates of gender-based violence continue to impede progress. Issues like insufficient funding, lack of political will, and inadequate implementation of policies further complicate the path to gender equality.

Looking forward to Beijing +30, participants emphasized the need for continued training and sensitization on women’s rights, increased funding for women’s economic activities, and greater political engagement. They called for stronger governmental support, justice for GBV victims, and comprehensive strategies to end violence against women and girls.

A key takeaway from the session was the importance of involving men as allies in the conversation, fostering inclusive dialogue, and breaking down silos to achieve sustainable outcomes.

As the international community gears up for Beijing +30, the commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in Africa remains resolute, with a clear focus on building upon the significant strides made and addressing the challenges that lie ahead.
