1. About FEMNET
The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) is a pan- African, feminist and membership-based network based in Nairobi, Kenya with over 800 individual and institutional members across 50 African countries and in the diaspora. FEMNET envisions a society where African women and girls thrive in dignity and well-being, free from patriarchal and neoliberal oppression and injustices.
Over the years, FEMNET has strategically positioned herself as a convener, organizer and facilitator of critical dialogues around women’s economic justice and rights; transformative women’s leadership; sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR); climate justice and natural resource governance as well as, ending all forms of violence and harmful/ discriminatory practices against women and girls.
FEMNET continues to be intentional in influencing decisions made at national, regional and global levels, constantly ensuring African women voices are amplified and their needs, priorities and aspirations are prioritized in key policy dialogues and outcomes that have direct and indirect impact on their lives. FEMNET mobilizes African women to hold their States accountable to women’s rights and gender equality commitments.

2. Objective/ Purpose of Assignment
The HerPower Partnership has come together to counter the anti-rights movement agenda that is spreading across the globe, and to unify efforts and messages for a strong counteroffer to newer generations. The focus of the Coalition is to support girls and women in Africa to claim and protect their rights and continue to ensure their voices are heard aligned with the Maputo Protocol. Collective efforts will support Girl-led Movement Building and Girls Advocacy.
The Coalition believe that adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) thrive when three interconnected dimensions are strengthened:
- Individual Level: AGYW have access to quality resources and services that build their holistic skills—covering education, health, leadership, and agency. Initiatives such as safe spaces, politicized curricula (Girls Decide), and comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) ensure they are equipped with knowledge, confidence, and resilience to navigate life choices.
- Group Level: AGYW are empowered to voice their concerns and aspirations, both individually and collectively, on issues that matter to them. Activities like peer-to-peer sexual education, gender norm discussions, and grassroots movements owning their data amplify their voices and foster solidarity. Understanding what motivates boys and men to support gender equality further strengthens collective advocacy.
- Enabling Environment Level: AGYW are supported and protected by actors within their ecosystem, including families, communities, institutions, and policymakers. This involves fighting fragmentation by linking movements, knowledge sharing, and mobilization efforts. Partnerships with religious leaders, lobbying governments to maintain focus on gender equality, and using data proactively to counter harmful narratives create a safe and inclusive environment for AGYW.
