4th GIMAC RECs Coordination Meeting on Gender Mainstreaming in the African Union

We, participants of the 4th Session of the Gender Is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC) AU-RECs Coordination meeting in Lusaka, Zambia from 11th to 12th July 2022 under the theme, ‘‘Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African continent: Strengthening agro-food systems, health and social protection systems for the acceleration of human, social and economic capital development” acknowledged our diversity and common objectives of advancing gender equality and the human rights of African girls and women;

WELCOME the African Union Heads of State and Government theme for 2022, on ‘‘strengthening resilience in nutrition and food security on the African continent: Strengthening agro-food systems, health and social protection systems for the acceleration of human, social and economic capital development”;

ACKNOWLEDGE that Nutritional resilience among women is essential to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment.

RECOMMIT ourselves to the long term partnership and collaboration with the AU, RECs, Member States, United Nations Agencies, Organised Private Sector, Women’s Movement, Civil Society and Community-Based Organizations to promote gender equality as well as women and girls empowerment as a foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable continent

AWARE of the 2013 Resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations on the Promotion of Declaration on the Rights and Responsibility of Individuals, Groups and Organs of Society to Promote and Protect Universally Recognised Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms: Protecting. Women Human Rights Defenders;

CONCERNED that women’s human rights is undermined by lack of ownership of and access to land, and other productive assets that affect their food sovereignty, and results in their persistence of structural violence and the women lack of protection, including in cases of SGBV and child marriage.

ACKNOWLEDGE the contribution of the Office of the Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security in highlighting women’s experiences in wars through solidarity missions and promoting their effective participation in peace building and post conflict reconstruction;

RECOMMIT ourselves to promoting the legal instruments of the AU dedicated to tackling malnutrition: Aspiration one of the Agenda 2063, The Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP), The Africa Health Strategy 2016-2030; The Africa Regional Nutrition Strategy 2015 – 2025 (ARNS); The Declaration on Nutrition Security for Inclusive Economic Growth and Sustainable Development in Africa; The Resolution on the Establishment of an OAU Inter-African Centre for Food Science, Technology and Nutrition; The African Union Continental Scorecard for Nutrition.
